2012 Select Eternity
2012 AFL Select Series II: Eternity
Release Date: 6th August 2012
9 Cards a Pack, 36 Packs a Box.
This year’s Series II AFL release by Select sees the retention of many familiar insert sets but also delivers the long awaited Hall of Fame update, Hall of Fame Series 4. Released on Monday the 6th of August 2012, this set also heralded the introduction of a Club Captain Logo Patch cards but more on this later. Old favourites such as Draft Pick Signatures, Medal Winners, All-Australian and Premiership Commemorative Cards also make an appearance in this release.
Read on for all the details
Base Set (220 Cards): Made up of 4 checklist cards and 12 player cards from each of the 18 teams. The base set this year stays consistent with typical Series II base cards with a player’s image placed on top of a design template background, themed in their team colours. The design is simple and quite minimalist, a feature of this year’s release.
Hall of Fame 2007-2011 (33 Cards): Composed of 1 checklist card and 32 inductees into the AFL Hall of Fame from 2007 to 2011, this long awaited update remains faithful to previous Hall of Fame design. Simplistic and elegant, these cards are inserted 1 in every pack and each box should produce a full set of this subset.
Hall of Fame Limited Edition Parallels (33 Cards): These parallel cards use the same design as their Hall of Fame regular equivalents but can be distinguished by the gold foil finish of the Hall of Fame logo on the bottom right, and on the border around the card and the inductee’s name. At the back of the card is also a foil stamped number of the card, # to 800 and they can be found 1 in every 9 packs.
2011 All-Australian (22 Cards): This year’s iteration of the All-Australian subset sees a heavily silver foiled design with each player set into a frame with their clubs colour and logo around the border, as well as the All-Australian logo. These are also inserted 1 in every 9 packs.
Hall of Fame Legends Cards and 2011 Medal Winner Cards (8 Cards): The Hall of Fame update also sees 3 inductees, Norm Smith, Alex Jesaulenko and Kevin Murray, elevated to Legend Status. Again, the 3 Legend Cards are represented faithful to previous Legend card designs which a oriented in landscape and having a strong black border with ‘Legend’, their name and the Hall of Fame Logo off-set in gold and silver foil. The other 5 cards in this 1 per box insert set are of the 2011 medal winners: Dane Swan, Lance Franklin, Jimmy Bartel, Dyson Heppell and Chris Judd. They are very simply designed cards featuring the player with their club logo, the medal they won set against a border with their club colours and gold and silver foil etchings of their name and the medal’s name.
AFL/VFL Premiership Commemorative Cards (16 Cards): This year’s Premiership Commemorative set is much larger than normal and inserted 1 per box, as opposed to the usual 1:72 pack ratio. Depicting 16 premiership sides from the early to mid 1900’s, and even one of Fitzroy from 1898, this set remains consistent with previously designed Premiership Commemorative sets with a team photo prominent set against a background of their team colours with the usual foil finish. Each of these cards is # to 400.
2011 Draft Pick Signature Cards (22 Cards): The usual highlight of most Series II sets are the Draft Signatures. This year’s set sees a departure from the standard round 1 draft selections getting a card; instead the top selection of each team gets a card with a few exceptions of course. This 22 card set features the top 3 selections, all by GWS in a heavily compromised draft and then the first selection of each of the other 17 teams. Essendon and Richmond fans get a bonus card to chase with both their second picks getting a signature card also. This year’s design sees the retention of the now common format of portrait shot with a large area below for the signature. However, the design is very minimalist with large areas of white encasing the players photo, a generic circle detailing the draft pick the player was taken with and their name along with small side detailing containing their club colours and their signature. These draft signatures are found 1 per box (36 packs) though early reports have found that each case contains one box with 2 draft signatures and one with none at all.
Club Captain Logo Patch (18 Cards): This much demanded for patch card makes its entrance into this series though many would be wondering if this is exactly what they envisioned as a patch card. This set features a portrait shot of each club captain (or captains in some cases) against a star-burst background set in their club colours. Underneath is a big space which contains a manufactured white patch over which the club logo is ironed-on/stuck-on/printed-on, who knows. At double the thickness of the other cards, this 1 per box insert is fairly discernible before the pack is even opened. Without going into the detail of a review, this insert set will probably be a fair source of discontent within the collecting community.
Signature Redemption Cards (5 Cards): This year’s signature redemption's sees the 2 still living Hall of Fame Legends get a nod along with 3 of the 5 medal winners. The two legend signature redemption's, Alex Jesaulenko and Kevin Murray, are # to 110, similar to previous Hall of Fame releases. The 3 medal winners are a little more common being # to 200 and feature Dane Swan, Lance Franklin and Dyson Heppell. For many, it’s about time we got another Buddy signature card and thankfully there isn’t another Chris Judd signature card on the market (though Carlton fans may not agree). Signature redemption cards can be found 1 in every 8 boxes (288 packs)
Premiership Redemption Card (1 Card): This year’s premiership redemption sees the retention of the singular premiership redemption card that is inserted one per case, and subsequently # to 400, which is redeemable for a mini-set commemorating whichever team is to win the 2012 premiership.
Case Card (2 Cards): These cards are insert into sealed case and celebrate players that have player 300 games during their career. The set started in 2001 and has continued through the years.
